Hello!  I am Tonya Nascimento.

I'm Tonya Nascimento, your ultimate ally in overcoming the challenges that hinder your full potential. Steer your efforts toward success with me by your side to help you navigate your journey and reach optimal performance.

I have spent countless hours in my "office" - the pool - meditating on and working toward my personal dreams of success in the athletic realm.  I acheived some success; my times were listed on the all-time top 10 list for the Southeastern Region for decades.  I competed and finaled at that level for 20 years.  I finaled at the YMCA Nationals and hit national qualifying times.  At Florida State University I competed at the Atlantic Coast Conference meet all four years, was the academic and community service leader in the entire conference, and made the university list for top 10 times in the 100 butterfly.  In 2023 I was inducted into the Okaloosa County Swimming Hall of Fame for recognition not only of my swimming accomplishments but also for over two decades of providing swim lesson instruction, coaching for 8 years, and providing mental performance coaching to dozens of swimmers one-on-one and as a team.  When I finally decided to stop the twice a day practices and constant pressure to perform, there was a sense of loss and a period of grappling with whether or not it was worth it.  I did not achieve all my dreams (does any athlete?), but I did learn a lot about what it takes to perform well and to take care of myself, and I developed a passion for helping others find their formula for success.

With my licensure in mental health counseling and PhD and certification in mental performance training, I now have the academic education to add to my personal experience so that I can help others using evidence-based practices.  I I believe it is through pushing ourselves to become our best and fearlessly driving forth toward our passions that we can best learn who we are and what we are capable of.  We need clarity and direction, and then the skills and strategies to move forward.  In whatever domain that is important to you, together I can help you conquer uncertainties, replace hindrances with healthy habits, and propel your performance toward optimal efficiency and success.

"Optimal" refers to the best or most favorable outcome, solution, or condition in a given situation. It implies the highest level of efficiency, effectiveness, or desirability achievable within a specific set of constraints or circumstances. Something that is optimal is ideally suited to achieve a particular goal or objective with the least amount of resources or effort required.

I can help you reach optimal performance. You can learn to perform in various realms - sport, career, parenthood, housework, relationships, and more - with efficiency. You can perform at the highest levels and still have a sense of well-being. You can BE and BECOME.

Optimal performance means the ability to hold these two tensions:

1) “Good, better, best; never rest until good be better and better best.”

AND

2) “In the race to be better or best, do not forget to just be.”

The mind and body both have to be in optimal working condition in order to have a successful athletic performance. Sport psychology is the study of the mind as it relates to athletic performance. It is the study of the motives of sport participation and how psychological factors influence sport performance. The research for sport/performance psychology is primarily from the area of sport; however, the principles are also applicable to other arenas of performance, such as public speaking, business, school, military, music, dance, acting, etc.  Mental Skills Training teaches athletes and other performers the tools necessary to strengthen and refine the mental game.

Mental skills training is distinct from mental health counseling in that mental skills are used to perform up to one’s potential whereas mental health counseling is primarily to help a person improve or resolve a deficit.  I have credentials in both mental health counseling and mental skills training; I am equipped to help along the entire continuum from low or decreased functioning to high or optimal performance.  However, because I am not currently insured as a counselor, if the issue requires a significant level of counseling intervention, I may refer you to a mental health provider.
